Over the Ivy Covered Fence is a wonderful book to share with children. It teaches that friends can be any age, and that fears can be overcome. Sam with the help of his elderly neighbor is able to conquer his fear of dogs. The illustrations were great, but I would have preferred more for children.This book was the first one I won on Goodreads and am thrilled with the book and the win.

Mr. Vento is a most gifted author, I got his last book and my entire family, kids and adults of all ages, loved it! His kindness and humanity are an inspiration to us all!
This book is a very sweet, beautifully illustrated story that I think would appeal to any parents who want to show their young children how to face a fear they might have. The author does a great job conveying how Sam has to face his fear of dogs.
A delightful story about a young boy who learns that dogs are not scary, as he establishes a deep bond with his neighbor's energetic pet. I have two grandchildren, a boy and girl, ages 4 and 8, and it's rare to find a book that appeals to both and that conveys important messages about friendship, growing older, and the value of overcoming one’s fears.
Ray Vento has done it again with another great Sam Caruso Story. This is a great book to include in a classroom library for students in the middle grades.
"Over the Ivy Covered Fence" is a gentle story that helps children over come fears they may face. In this story Sam is afraid of dogs, but it could be used to help show children how to face other fears.
The illustrations are delightful.
I have just finished reading "Over The Ivy Covered Fence"...It is a delightful book for young readers.
I had already read "Nonno's Pocket Watch" both books are lovingly written.
They both teach lessons in a very caring and and gentle way. Ray Vento writes beautifully and from the
heart and Jay Mazhar's illustrations add a sensitive, realistic images of the characters.
I look forward to reading the next Sam Caruso Story and to purchasing the entire series for the young
people I know!!!!
This is the second of Ray Vento's books about Sam Caruso, a young boy growing up in Los Angeles in the late 1940's and early 1950's. It's a charming tale about new friendships, overcoming fears, and building trust. In this particular story, it's Sam's fear of large dogs and how he overcomes that fear and makes a new friend in Max, a black Labrador Retriever that is the heart of the plot. He also makes another new friend - Mrs. Thompson, the lady who lives next door, "Over The Ivy Covered Fence" whom Max belongs to.
Heartwarmingly written by Mr. Vento, and beautifully illustrated by Jay Mahzar in a style that evokes the period in wonderful detail, "Over The Ivy Covered Fence" will be treasured by all who read it and is destined to be a classic of literature for young people.
